The importance of checking your tyres for the winter
Did you know that 1 in 5 drivers have never checked their tyres for the winter? Older tyres which are worn can be dangerous in any weather but its a lot more important to keep an eye on your tread when it comes to the darker nights and wetter weather conditions.
There are three things you should consider when checking your tyres.
- Air pressure: The recommended pressure can normally be found in your car or alternatively we can find this for you.
- Condition: look for any visible damage, such as lumps, bumps, or cracks? look for any signs which may show that your tyres are nearing the end of their life?
- Tread depth: this is what gives you grip on the road. 1.6mm is the legal minimum depth, but you should be changing your tyres before they get that low to ensure they grip the road safely.
If you need a hand checking? Or would feel more reassured if our team had a look? Either way, we’re here to help.

How do i know if my tyres are loosing their grip?
Before your tyres actually loose control these are a few tell tail signs.
- Steering might feel lighter
- The engine may suddenly get louder
- The rear of your car might drift from side to side
In the event your car started to aquaplane, here are a few tips to help keep you safe.
- Don’t brake suddenly – this will make you spin more
- Gently reduce the acceleration
- Hold the steering wheel straight and wait to regain control
- Only once you’ve got your grip back, gently apply the brakes.
Wet weather and stopping distances.
Another thing to consider in wet weather is how long it can take you to come to a stop. Stopping distances can more than double when it comes to wet roads as the tyres have less grip.
Therefore it is important to ensure your tyres are in good condition.
- Keeping a good distance from the car in front of you is important in winter weather conditions especially – since it’ll take twice as long to stop.
- Winter weather conditions such as heavy rain, fog and snow can make it harder to see potential hazards. Therefore it is important to keep an eye out for anything that might cause you to brake so you can be ready ahead of time.
