A recent article in the Auto Express found that motorists were leaving it too late to replace their tyres.

Currently, if a motorist is found to be driving with an illegal tyre they can face 3 points on their license plus a maximum fine of £2,500 per tyre.

Dangers of an Illegal Tyre

When a tyre wear down they become less efficient, especially when it comes to gripping the road. The legal limit is 1.6mm, when a tyre is below this the handling and braking on the road can be unreliable which can lead to an increased chance of an accident.

Checking your tyres

Tyres should be checked at least once a month, to give them a slightly more in-depth test.

Attention should be paid to the overall condition of the tyres including the sidewall

Tread depth
Pressure of the Tyre
Signs of irregular wear
Your spare tyre should be checked
