The dangers of a tyre puncture – When a tyre puncture or a flat tyre occurs it could potentially lead to permanent tyre damage or even loss of the vehicle.

In the event of a flat tyre whilst driving you must slow down and pull over where safe on one side of the road. Continuing to drive, you could damage the wheel even end up in an accident. Furthermore travelling at high speeds in these conditions could make you lose total control of the vehicle.

Typical causes of tyre punctures

Generally, the most common causes when it comes to tyre punctures are either a slow or rapid deflation of the tyre due to a sharp object piercing it on the move.

Repairing a tyre

Tyre puncture repairs is not as straightforward as often people think. BSAU159 British Standard defines the limits to the material which can be used and the number of repairs which can be carried out, based on the size and location of the tyre puncture.

The tyre has to be thoroughly inspected prior to caring out the repair and should not be done in the case of the following:

  • Tread depth is below the legal limit of 1.6mm
  • The structural integrity is broken it has run flat damage
  • Any damage caused by an external object
  • Aged, worn out or deteriorated rubber
  • Exposed cords
  • Signs of previous faulty repairs.
