Many new cars are being fitted with run flat tyres at manufacturing stage. If drivers are unsure if their tyres are run flats they can check on the sidewall of the tyre. In addition, the car will have a TPMS monitor which can access any pressure changes. Therefore making it easier to detect any punctures or low pressure.
In this article we look at some of the advantages of run flat tyres.
- A puncture or blowout can be a drivers worst nightmare, apart from disturbing your travelling it also means you have to either call a company or attempt changing your tyre at the side of the road. This in itself can be dangerous especially on busy roads or motorways. Add poor weather conditions to the mix and it could be certainly a drivers worst nightmare. This is probably the main benefit of having run-flats, they allow you to continue on your journey for around 50 miles with a max speed of up to 50 mph.
- Not having a spare wheel – this is another advantage. By not having to carry a spare wheel it lowers the weight of the vehicle which helps achieve a better fuel economy and mileage. In addition, it helps create extra storage without the need for carrying extra tools etc.
Although it could be tempting to replace your original run-flats with standard ones due to perhaps the low-cost of conventional tyres. It isn’t recommended as a regular tyre could affect your handling of the car and control in turn making it more dangerous to drive.
Generally, its not recommended to mix tyre tyre types on the same vehicle, whether that is run flat or standard tyres. Different tyres have different characteristics would could affect the handing and driving of the car. Therefore if you are thinking of switching to run flats, we would certainly advise changing all of your tyres at the same time to them.
