New European legislation comes into force for tyre labelling from the 1st November 2012
New European legislation on tyre labelling will come in to place from the first of November 2012.
Who will grade the tyres ?
Throughout Europe, each manufacturer or importer has the responsibility of grading their own tyres according to a strict testing system. This self-certification aims to provide consistent, reliable grading so, as consumers, we should be able to confidently compare different tyres and brands through the tyre labelling.
What benefit does this have to the tyre user ?
Increase in performance, improved safety and economic efficiency
Clearer, standardisation information regarding the three characteristics concerned.
More information for tyre users
The tyre labelling will be stuck to new tyres and are not compulsory but, if labels are not provided a leaflet in the point of sale or online documentation should be made available.
Product specific information should be displayed for information only for private and light commercial vehicles.
What information will the tyre labelling show?
- Fuel consumption and CO2 emission
- Braking on wet surfaces
- External noise
What tyres does this concern?
This covers tyres for private cars and light commercial vehicles and trucks, coaches and buses which were manufactured after 1st July 2012. The new tyre labelling legislation does not apply to:
- Retreaded tyres
- Certain professional off road tyres
- Tyres designed for competition purposes only
- Studded tyres (however, studded tyres supplied without studs fall under the regulation)
- Temporary use spare tyres
- Tyres which were designed to be fitted only to vehicles registered for the first time before 1st October 1990
- Tyres whose speed rating is less than 80 Km/h or tyres whose nominal rim diameter does not exceed 254mm or is 635mm or more.
