Tyre Markings What Do They Mean?
When it comes to tyre markings it is importance when driving a vehicle to have a good understanding of what the markings on the sidewall mean. Did you know they can affect the performance, safety and the overall life span of your tyres.
Tyre Markings The Size – An Understanding Of What They Mean
Generally the tyre size is normally the first thing you’ll notice on the sidewall of the tyre. Therefores it is important to get the right size for your vehicle. The incorrect size can affect both the handling and performance for your vehicle. The size usually comes in a sequence of both numbers and letters.
Example below:
- The “P” indicates that the tyre is designed for a passenger car.
- The “205” indicates the width of the tyre in millimetres.
- The “55” indicates the aspect ratio, which is the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the width.
- The “R” indicates that the tyre has a radial construction.
- The “16” indicates the diameter of the wheel in inches.
Tyre Age Markings
Tyres are not made to last forever, overtime they can degrade even in circumstances wherer they havent been used. The actual age of the tyre is indicated by a four digit number placed on the sidewall. It represents both the week and year in which the tyre was manufactured. As an example if the number was 1221 it would mean the tyre was made in the 12th month of 2021. As a recommendation you should replace your tyres every six eyar regardless of the remaining tread.
Other Tyre Markings
In addition to the size and age, there are other markings on the sidewall of the tyre which a driver should understand.
- Load Index: This indicates the maximum weight that the tyre can carry.
- Speed Rating: This indicates the maximum speed that the tyre can safely handle.
- Treadwear Rating: This indicates the expected lifespan of the tyre’s tread.
- Traction Rating: This indicates how well the tyre can grip the road in wet conditions.
- Temperature Rating: This indicates how well the tyre can withstand heat and dissipate it.
