Why are winter tyres important?
With the upcoming winter conditions, safety is crucial when on the roads. Driving in the winter causes great concern for everyone due to road conditions being unpredictable. The best possible way to increase your safety in icy and snowy conditions is to equip the correct tyres depending on the time of year.
Identifying the correct type of tyre
Three types of tyres are used across the UK which are beneficial for different scenarios. The most common tyres are summer tyres which are usually the original tyres equipped on vehicles. These tyres thrive best in dry conditions with the leniency of rain however the performance rate of summer tyres decrease when temperatures begin to fall. The next type of tyre is the All-season tyres which are suitable for all weather conditions. Unlike other tyre builds, the all-season tyres do not need to be changed. The final type of tyre is the winter tyre which many people don’t consider. They specialise in colder temperatures to withstand snow and ice and provide you with a safer journey in winter. Many people are uneducated on tyre types therefore the benefits are undervalued. The winter tyres have to be changed when summer comes due to the tree characteristics which aren’t suitable for the summer.
Maintenance of car tyres
When the temperatures begin to plummet, there are several things that need to be considered when maintaining your vehicle. One of the most important duties is to regulate your tyre pressure. Tyre pressure naturally deflates in the colder months however most modern cars come with a tyre pressure detector to notify when the pressure falls below a certain figure. Tyre pressure in your winter tyres can easily be found with a pressure gauge. Other factors such as tread depth need to be checked with a tread gauge to ensure the depth is above 1.6mm. Tyre pressure is something which always needs to be monitored however it needs to be done at a greater rate during winter. Washing your tyres regularly prevents corrosion from salts or other elements which are produced due to the colder temperatures.
